Let your AI find you an empty room
Connect once, then just ask. Your assistant checks BYU's class schedule and tells you which rooms are open. Free, read-only, no login.
__BASE__/mcp
Connect your assistant
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and click Add custom connector.
- Paste the server URL and name it BYU Rooms.
- Start a new chat and ask for a room.
Don't see Connectors? Your plan may not allow custom connectors. Claude Code or the No MCP tab will still work.
Run this in your terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http byu-rooms __BASE__/mcp
Add this to your MCP config (in Cursor, that's ~/.cursor/mcp.json). No API key needed.
{
"mcpServers": {
"byu-rooms": {
"url": "__BASE__/mcp"
}
}
}
Paste this into a coding agent that can make web requests, like Claude Code or Cursor. It explains the API, so there's nothing to install. Add what you're looking for on the last line.
I want to find an empty classroom at BYU. Use the FreeRoomFinder public API (read-only JSON, no login or API key).
Find open rooms:
GET __BASE__/api/v1/rooms/available/{BUILDING}/{DATE}/{START}/{MINUTES}
- BUILDING: a building code like JKB or HBLL, or "all"
- DATE: YYYY-MM-DD, "today", or "tomorrow"
- START: 24-hour time, e.g. 14:00
- MINUTES: 15 to 960
Example: __BASE__/api/v1/rooms/available/JKB/tomorrow/14:00/120
Building codes: GET __BASE__/api/v1/buildings (only buildings with has_cached_rooms=true have results).
Request the URL exactly as shown, with no extra parameters. All times are Mountain Time (America/Denver). A room counts as free when no class is scheduled there; it's a walk-in space, not a reservation. Full docs: __BASE__/api/v1/docs
My request:
Chat apps that browse the web, like ChatGPT, can be hit or miss with this. If yours supports connectors, use one of the other tabs instead.
Then just ask
Click one to copy it.
Walk-in, not reserved
A room is "free" when no class is scheduled there. Someone else may still be using it.
Searched buildings only
If a building comes back empty, search it once on the main page, then ask again.
Weekly schedule
Dates use that weekday's class schedule in Mountain Time. Holidays and finals aren't included.
